Gymboree Class Stage 5 : 1 of 4

Today was an exciting day for Ozzy & I. We enrolled for a 4 week session at the Gymboree. We had a fun time while learning along the way.

The activities involving pretending to be mail carriers provided incredibly rich opportunities to build your child's thinking, language and social skills. His advanced motor skills also helped her to act out increasingly elaborate pretend scenarios. -Gymboree in Partnership with www.zerotothree.org

My Ozzy learned:
  • Mail Box Drop - climbing skills as well as cognitive skills.
  • Playing at the "Post Office" - encourage the child to try out different roles as they pretend to process big & small packages for delivery. It also encouraged social interaction.
  • Pretending to be mail carriers - develops the child's growing creativity and ability to expand on ideas like pretending to give a "letter" to Gymbo.
All in all it was a worthwhile 1 hour session. Ozzy showed improvement in his social skills. During last week's trial class he was more quiet and into playing alone, now he would go up to his classmates and at one point even gave a girl classmate a big hug!

Although he still has very much to improve on. When it comes to gathering round in a circle to sing songs and dance, he would just look. I would have to prod him on so that he would do the actions too.

But when it comes to physical activities he has no problems at all! He would climb, jump and slide like the teacher asked. I can't wait for next week's class! Today, I was not able to take pictures - but promise (chi) I would next week!^_^

After a tiring class we headed off to the mall to have our lunch and some grocery shopping. I was thinking of looking for nice car covers since Whitey (our car) always gets dirty when parked outside because he is under a tree.

Owwww..P.S. while we were having lunch, the Jollibee Mascot was there for a birthday party! Ozzy was scared! lolz. I thought he loved the Bee! I guess seeing him move was a bit different for him.

How was your Saturday?

Question of the Week #29

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Yen's QOTW

1. When you see a man and woman walking together, do you automatically see them as ‘a couple’?
::: Yup, unless the guy looks openly GAY. lolz :::

2. Is it always okay to walk along minding your own business, not bothering anyone?
::: Of course, as long as you're not getting in the others way its better to mind your own business :::

3. Which foods that you believe are bad for you that you stubbornly refuse to stop eating?
::: Chicharon :::

4. How would you handle these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights?
::: Rainy Day - I would stay inside the house and watch movies or play with my son.
Lost Luggage - Call the airlines right away and follow up every hour until I get my lost luggage.
Tangled Xmas Light - Sit on it until I untangle it. If not I'd go crazy. I know I won't stop until I straighten it out :::

5. Do you easily adopt habits or phrases from the people around you?
::: Yeah..my friend Yova says Ola when he greets us, I say that lately too arggg even if it irritates even ME! ahaha :::

6. What do you think of this situation?
~ In a checkout line at a store, someone is angrily yelling at the cashier because she’s waiting for minutes already. A long line of people are behind them with no other checkout line available. Does the angry person have a right to be yelling?

::: Well, no. That person can say it nicely BUT I do understand where he's coming from, maybe he has somewhere to go and can't be late that's why he blew up :::

7.How often are you greeted by strangers in a friendly manner while walking around in public?
::: Well, does the security guards and sales ladies count? If yes, every time I am out :::

8. What do you think of Crocs?
::: Actually I was thinking of getting one for myself...A Malindi.. :::

9. How long does it take you to get ready to go out?
::: 1 hour :::

10. What kind of accent do you find attractive?
::: BRITISHHHHH! Love their fancy shmancy accent :::

Gymbo & Ozzy

Monday, August 25, 2008

I've been contemplating on the pro and cons of sending Joshua off to a playgroup. Some say its unnecessary and that he's too young for "school". Others say that its not really school and that its all play the main point is that the boy (who spends most of his time with grown ups) can have interaction with kids his age.

I know only 2 places offering a playgroup for kids between 12 months up until 36 months. The first one is in Ayala mall, its called playroom an affiliate of B.R.I.T.E Academy, the other one is Gymboree.

I opted for Gymboree because they offered a class once a week unlike the Playroom who offers classes 3x a week MWF. Ozzy and I went in for a 1 hour trial class last Saturday in the Gym. We went in the Play & Learn class with Teacher Farah.

We came in early for the class so Ozzy went in and just played with the hoops.

Photobucket

He also had fun in the slides. Climbing & jumping around surely is his forte.
Photobucket
=====o0o=====
Photobucket
I don't have a picture of him in the slide because I took these pictures myself and its hard taking pictures while looking after the boy.

The class' theme was on Fire Trucks and Fire Fighters. The kids learned all about the big red fire truck and while exploring the make shift truck they actually were encouraged to develop their physical skills like climbing, coordination and upper & lower body strength. They were pretending to wash the truck and put out the fire with the use of rope as hose. This encouraged the children to grasp the concept of symbols and develop their use of their imagination.
Photobucket

I liked the way the teachers also encouraged the children to "put away" the toys they used and give them back to the teacher.

Ozzy loved the bubbles and the parachute too! ^_^
Photobucket

Photobucket

All in all we had a wonderful time. I am convinced that I'd enroll my little one in the Gym but for a 4 week session only. If I see that he likes it and he's learning from it, I'd think of signing him up for other classes as well.

How was your weekend?

Platonic Friendship

Platonic friendship between a girl & a boy. Is there such a thing?

.....A picture of me & my high school best friends M(girl) and J(boy) sent me back to a time when I thought my world crashed. 10 years ago we were inseparable. We would see each other everyday after school. Since J and I were neighbors, we became much closer. He would call me everyday and we would talk on the phone for hours! Although him and M were also close, they did not talk as much. So naturally, even if I denied it for fear of ruining our beautiful friendship, we fell for each other. That was a mistake if you ask me.

We never became an item because I wanted to wait. I was 15 at that time, and since he was 2 years older than me, waiting was not in his agenda. He eventually got tired and started going out with others who drank and partied all night. Since I did not approve, he stopped calling me. He started going out with M more.

Then to make the long story short, they fell in love. Predictable.

After all that, I never hung out with them anymore. I lost my 2 best friends. And for what? Puppy-love? Was it worth it?

I don't know. I've seen too many movies with this kind of plot. You may be wondering if they ended up together?

They did not. If I could go back in time, I would have done things differently and maybe I would not have lost my friends. They were a big part of my life then and now we don't even get to talk. They were not in my wedding and in the birth of my son. We send occasional text messages during birthdays and holidays though..at least we've not totally burned our bridges.

Oh well. That's life.

Driving School

Thursday, August 14, 2008

You must be really sick and tired of tags in here right? Well, good news! This is a real post.

Tomorrow is my last day in driving school. Tomorrow, I've supposedly completed my lessons. 3 years ago, I took the same course and passed, but I stopped driving because of too many traumatic reasons so now, 3 years later plus baby minus Josh, I need to seriously drive again. So for 2 hours every day for 5 days I am going to learn to drive again. Hopefully by the end of the 10-hour session my confidence is back too.

Car: Vios, manual
Instructor: Kenneth
Day 1 : I was slowly getting to know the feel of driving again. We were in 1st and 2nd gear always. We were driving in the main roads so I won't have to deal with small spaces and sharp turns.

Car: Vios, manual
Instructor: Kenneth
Day 2 : I was taught backing and driving in small roads. We also took up sharp turns and uphill roads. Half clutch much? Ghad my legs hurt because I'm really short so I have to extend my legs for a full clutch down. Tsk.Tsk. Also, it was raining hard this day so that was extra hard.

Car: Vios, manual
Instructor: Kenneth
Day 3 : Parking!! We also had to practice more on small roads, sharp turns, uphill slopes and the magic of half-clutch. My confidence level is 50% already.

Car: Avanza, manual
Instructor: Dodong
Day 4 : Bigger car! Surprisingly I found parking it a-ok! It had bigger side mirrors so that was a plus point. I learned parallel parking, and front and back first parking. By this time I can say I am 80% confident in my skills. Yey.

So anyway, I must get some shut eye so I will be in 100% driving mode tomorrow. Weee ^_^

Question of the Week # 6 : Meeting the Challenge of Motherhood

{START COPY}

The Rules:
The aim of these questions is to share opinions and experiences among moms (or dads) in the blogosphere.
Each week a new question will be posted and I’m inviting mom and dads to answer and share their thoughts about it.
If you are participating, leave your links in the comments section.
Link back to this site inviting other parents to join the fun.
Try to visit the other participants…you will love their answers, that’s for sure

I had been a entirely different person ever since I became a mom. I’m pretty sure other moms feel the same way. It was the best privilege ever presented to me but it comes with a lot of challenges. So the question of the week goes…

"What adjustments did you make in your life to fit the role of a mother? Can you share some tips to make your tasks easier?"

{END COPY}

Suffice to say, my life took a 360 degree turn when I became a mom. I've mentioned numerous times before how crazy my life was before. Not that I was a rebel, of course not, but I was self absorbed and really selfish. All I did was party and shop. Not that that's bad, I was just enjoying my youth and now that I have a baby to take care of, my priorities changed - big time.

Major adjustment was with my social life. It went down to zero after the baby was born. I was determined to be a hands-on mom despite working full time. My advantage was I worked at home so I can change my schedule a bit. I was also breast feeding the boy 100% until about he was 10-months old so that meant I can only be away for 3 hours (max).

Good thing my family, friends and hubby were supportive because, as a first time and somewhat young mom, I needed all the help I could get!

Whatever role I play now, I am always a mother first. Mother before an employee, daughter and sometimes even my being a wife comes in second. (but I've made adjustments on that too! hihi) It's not easy to adjust at first but now after 2 years, I can say that I am fully adjusted and I am very satisfied with how I've changed and how much I've grown and learned. Even thinking of baby #2 ahahaha ^_^

Some tips to make motherhood easier?

  • Me time - It's a good idea to ask help in terms of caring for you child because motherhood is never easy. Of course we want to be as hands on as possible but we also need some 'me' time. It may sound selfish but even 1 hour a day of me time can steer you clear out of insanity. I know I've been there. Lack of sleep and too much work can drain you even if you think your super mom. So don't be afraid to ask for help, assistance and some time off to take a nap of enjoy a simple relaxing bath.
  • Organize - Let's be realistic here, we can't be at all places at the same time, so when it comes to motherhood we should learn to sacrifice, prioritize and organize activities to be able to fit them all. Time management is the key. We have to have everything necessary close by (or inside a diaper bag ready for pickup) to avoid unnecessary delay or stress.
  • Mommy day - I work full time from Monday to Friday, so during Saturdays I make it a point to spend the whole day with my son. Bonding with him and learning with him is very important for me and gives me the boost of energy to keep on going even if at times its tiring.
That's it for my tips. Also, if you are a full time working mom you may find these tips I found online helpful.
  1. Get--and stay--organized. Your work time is precious and not as dependable as it would be if you worked in a traditional workplace. You can't afford to waste time looking for files, sorting through junk mail or even finding a pen. Keep everything clean and organized from the start. Have supplies available and in a place where you know you can immediately put your hands on them.
  2. Have a plan. Some mompreneurs use paper organizers and some use tech gadgets, but all of them use some sort of planner to balance their work life with their family life. (Personally, I love the "Chaos Companion" organizer by Mommy Hulabaloo. It's a complete mom-inspired day planner.) Ideally, you should keep both personal and work appointments on the same calendar so you don't overbook or double up. And while it doesn't always work, you need to set aside hours for when you're going to get your work done. If you just wait for it to happen, it never will. Of course, you'll have to be flexible as your child-care provider will inevitably cancel, your kids will get sick and your spouse may occasionally need to work late.
  3. Work with your family, not against them. When your children are little, make sure your office is kid-proof. Get covers for your computer and child-safe drawers on your filing cabinet, and keep your paperwork out of reach if you don't want your reports and invoices covered in crayon. Some women I've spoken with set up a child's office space within their office so that crayons, paper and activities are available to keep their kids busy. As your children get older, find ways to get them involved in your work. When they're old enough, let them stamp envelopes, fold fliers or shred paper. Just never let them answer the phone!
  4. Think nap to nap, not 9 to 5. Break out of the 9-to-5 office hours' tradition. Your hours as a mompreneur might start before your family wakes up, continue during nap times and go on into the wee hours of the night. Prioritize appointments that need to be accomplished in person during the traditional day time hours. But understand that e-mail, filing, reading, and a lot of your other office tasks can be done at any hour of the day or night.
  5. Stay ahead of the game. By the time evening hits, yes, you're exhausted. But take a few minutes to set out school clothes, set up the coffeepot, prepare lunches and clear your desk. You'll be so grateful to have a less chaotic morning if you do all this the night before. You might also want to consider getting up a little before your family does so you can exercise, take a shower or get some work done.
  6. Suzy Homemaker who? You don't have to be Suzy Homemaker to be a good mom. Let go of your need to be Martha Stewart. Your priorities are your family and then your work. You don't have to be the mom that bakes the school brownies from scratch or hand-makes the costume for the school play. Choose your priorities--your kids will care more that you're there!
  7. Schedule a mommy day. Every Tuesday used to be so stressful for me because I didn't have a nanny or my husband to help out at all. I prayed for long naps and few interruptions. Needless to say, most of the time, it didn't happen. So I finally decided to make Tuesdays a "mommy day." I worked more on Monday night and Wednesday to make sure I could have Tuesdays to myself. Now when I get work done on that day, it's an extra perk and not a source of distress.
  8. Stay focused, and don't get sidetracked. One of the hardest things for work-at-home moms is getting sidetracked by children, laundry, dishes?well, you name it. Make a list each month of what you intend to get done. Then break the list down week by week, then day by day. If you stay focused, you can stay committed to getting things done.
  9. Get help from your partner, then thank him for it. It's very difficult to succeed without help, so communicate with your partner about how he can help you--you both need to remember you're juggling two full-time jobs. Figure out how to parent and chore-share so you're both on the same page. Then tell your spouse how grateful you are for all his help.
  10. Take care of you. How can you work out when you don't have enough time with your kids? How can you take a bubble bath when you're behind on a report? Realize now that there will never be enough time in the day to get everything done. Your in-box will still be full when you die, so learn to accept that fact now. It may seem like a clich?, but in this case, it's the truth: You have to take care of yourself in order to take care of your family, your business and your home. Just mark it in your calendar!

Hot or Not?

Monday, August 11, 2008

I was bored last Saturday afternoon. Ozzy was napping and there was nothing much I could do (aside from blogging) - but I was extremely bored so when I saw a pair of scissors, I immediately decided to do my hair and sport the "full bangs" look.

I said to myself, I can always put a clip or headband if it turns out to be a disaster. Bwahahaha but I was secretly hoping it won't end up to be a major disaster.

I remember crying in Ricky Reyes salon when I was in college because of an ugly bangs look. Teehee but that was ages ago. I am more open to change now.

So? Wanna see me now?

Photobucket

Wait..I'm not done yet!

Photobucket

Uyyy..Excited?

Hahaha - went out to show off my bangs. (Kahit hindi pantay!)

So is it HOT or NOT? Let me know!

I'll prolly wear something blah since I don't have anyting new to wear, BUT if I had all the money and resources in the world I'd wear something like this for a simple dinner party.

Polyvore

Saturday Special

Toni's Saturday Special is here!

1. While on a Caribbean cruise, I take the elevator to get to my room. Accidently pressing the wrong button, the elevator door closes and then opens and I find myself in the 13 floor.

2. Being the curious type, I leave the elevator and start to walk down the hallway and soon come to an empty room with big mirrors hanging all over the room.

3. Now worried, I turn around to go back to the elevator when I suddenly see little girl crying.

4. A little relieved and laughing to myself I realize that I she's lost just like me ^_^ so we head on out down the lobby.

But when I turned to the little girl she was gone.

Katie Holmes, Short-ER hair.

Thursday, August 7, 2008

I'm not even sure when this was taken, but I read that Katie updated her hair - yet again to even a much shorter bob.

Personally, I think she looks great whichever way she does her hair. But My favorite was the one with heavy bangs. She looks so chic that time.

I was thinking of getting bangs myself but Ruby, my stylist from Tony & Jackey said that I may not look too good in bangs because, unlike Katie I have a short forehead.

Hmmmm? Really now?

But seriously, I am considering cutting my hair again. The last time I had my haircut was in April.
I'm due back in the salon anytime soon, the problem is I am torn! I want to grow my hair, but most people say I look better with short hair. Should I listen to them or should I just go ahead and grow it????

The thing with short hair is that it has to be maintained every 3 months or else it will lose its style and you end up with frizzy unkempt hair...hmmmmm

Thoughts?

Logging off soon.

Still missing hubby, on the brighter side, he's got his laptop already!^_^ yey!

When SAHM-one Speaks #2

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Would you allow your child to go out on a date at an early age (as early as 16)? What do you think you’d feel about it if one day your child would ask you “Ma, can I go out on Friday night with…..? Be honest ladies!

Oh no....!!!!

Ok, so I have a baby boy right now and I don't really know how I'd feel when its a girl BUT as of this very moment, hearing my child say they want to date at 16(!) will freak me out. I will only allow them to date when they turn 18.

I know, I know times have changed - even I started to "explore" dating and had my first kiss before I even turned 16, so I've been there. Looking back, it was all good. I learned and I grew stronger from my experiences even though most of the time I was left heartbroken.

I've experienced not being accepted because I was not Chinese, I've tried going unnoticed by a long time crush, I've cried over a cheater, I've hurt someone by falling out of love, I've dumped some, I've been dumped, I've even tried falling for someone who turned out to be gay & we had the same crush!

Why deny my child that?

I am not denying anything. I will allow her to take phone calls, have friends over and even allow boys to visit my daughter at home with my supervision until of course when she turn 18 then I'll allow her to date, go out and explore "unattended". By this time I feel she's big enough to understand what she's getting herself into.

I just don't want her to start early. I want for her to learn that dating is not something she should take lightly because she might get hurt or she might hurt others. I want her to know that relationships is fun and at the same time, a learning experience. It was such a learning experience for me and as much as possible I want her to be able to share those things with me.

Just like what I had with my mom.

So, for my boy Lil Ozzy, I'd allow you to date when you turn 18 too. But I guess that would be negotiable since your dad already gave you the GO signal as early as now. The nerve. I don't want to be a grandma soon! hahaha

8 Rules to Make LDR Work

LDR or Long Distance Relationship, can it work? Or will the relationship eventually fail? 3 words I never thought I'd come to terms with.

When J accepted the job in Norway I never really thought it would actually happen...and happen fast! It's his first day of work there now and already I'm counting the days when he'll come home!

Here are 8 simple guidelines that we can bear in mind to make a long distance relationship work.

  1. Ask the important questions at the onset, to make sure you are both clear on the parameters of the relationship. These can be difficult and awkward questions to ask, but will save you great heartache and misunderstanding down the line. Example: "Are you open to the possibility of relocating the family in the future? (we're considering this)
  2. Communicate in some way every day, more than once if possible. Since you won't be seeing each other, it's important to establish and maintain an emotional connection. These don't have to be long, in-depth conversations (though those should occur sometimes). Tell each other about your little triumphs and tragedies. Ask for advice. Use an instant messenger program or VoIP for real-time chat, or web cams for that visual connection, but while instant messaging and e-mails play a large role in long distance relationships, remember that they can in no way replace verbal communication. E-mail is great so make sure you use it, especially if long-distance phone calls put a strain on your budget.(Even though phone calls might get a little too expensive, there are special cards if you are to call each other from different countries, there will be no problems with costs since it is very cheap. We highly recommend you get one of those cards, it will be a lot cheaper and from experience E-mail and instant messages makes it easier to misunderstand each other.) Write love letters. Send small gifts or flowers for no reason. In this case, quantity is as important as quality. You may discover an advantage over others whose partner is close at hand - you don't take communication for granted!
  3. Take advantage of the benefits a long distance relationship offers: more time with friends and/or family, no arguments over toothpaste caps, the pleasure of seeing your sweetheart again after a long absence, time to mull your options (rather than snapping at your partner impulsively) before you respond to that email s/he wrote that seemed so rude the first time you read it, etc. Most important, being far apart gives you a chance to maintain your individuality - something that can get lost in the shuffle when couples spend all their free time together.
  4. Pursue common interests, even if it means pursuing them apart. If there's a movie you're both interested in seeing, watch it individually and then call each other afterward and talk about it. Read a certain book at the same time. Stargaze while on you're on the phone. Set your watches to go off at the same time every day, and synchronize your alarm with that of your partner. Make it a point to think of each other when your watch goes off, and revel in the fact that he or she is thinking about you, too. Find creative ways to bond.
  5. Avoid the temptation to be controlling. People have free will and no one can or should control another person. As long as you are both interested in being in the relationship, you will stick with it and distance will not make a difference. As soon as one of you decides the other is not a good match - or someone else is a better match - your relationship ends, whether you live 3000 miles apart, two streets over, or share the same bed with your wedding picture on the wall. You are going to have to trust each other completely if this relationship is going to work.
  6. Talk about your future together. Assuming that ultimately you'd want to live together, discussing how you're going to get to that point will help you prove to each other that the relationship is going somewhere and that your efforts and frustrations are not in vain.
  7. Know when to say good-bye. While this is tough in any relationship, this can be especially hard over long distances. When communication becomes one-sided or sparse for too long and for no apparent reason, when arguments (yes, you'll have them) become too frequent, when the whole thing just seems like more trouble than it's worth, it's time to re-evaluate the relationship. Either you'll decide to go your separate ways, or you'll get closer for having overcome another obstacle to your happiness together.
  8. Remember things will get better with time, and even the relationship will become better. Have hope.

Good luck to me then! Ciao!

Coffee Break 1.29

Friday, August 1, 2008

They say that you will somehow get the picture of a person's character by looking at the things she carries in her bag.

Some carry just their essentials. While others seem to carry their lives in their handbags. While most women don't leave their homes without a bag, I know quite a number who would rather be bag-less and just carry a lipgloss in their pockets. In this week's coffee break, let's talk personal.

This week, Jan asked

What's in your everyday bag?

Since I am a mom now, I never carry purses anymore, its always a big sturdy bag for me so I won't need a diaper bag anymore. When I go out with Ozzy I rarely bring a yaya so I need to have one bag so my hands a free.

This is my brown bag, I have a big white bag too.

Photobucket

Photobucket

It's always full of stuff. Forgive the mess. What's inside?

+baby powder
+wipes
+pink kikay kit
+extra nappy
+extra clothes
+pen
+paper
+wallet
+sometimes baby bottle
+water
+food (biscuit)
+mint (tictac)

Shucks. I really need one of those bag organizers. So, what's in your bag?

It's Friday, Enjoy the weekend. Ciao!
