Energy Efficient Green Home.

Friday, May 21, 2010

I was reading this great article about a local couple who made it a point to "go green" when designing their dream home. Their house was deemed, the Green House of Talamban, Cebu. Coincidentally, Green is also the couples last name. Glen Green, an American who married a Cebuana used the natural elements of nature to conserve energy. For example, light come naturally through the glass blocks and the wind is regulated by ventilators. Can you believe there's no air-conditioner in their 3-story home. The couple also has water tanks to store rain water. “It is all about using wisely the resources that God has given us and not being wasteful of these", said Green who is currently a teacher of Biology and Architecture in the University of San Carlos- Talamban Campus with a PhD in Earth and Planetary Science.

In building my own dream house, I will keep all this in mind. Right now, without sounding preachy, I urge everyone to do what they can to go green and save the earth. After all, we only have one earth. Why not plant a tree in your backyard? Have a compost pit? We have the latter in our house. My mom made sure of this. As for the tree, I am happy to say I contributed to that. One time, we got a Mango seedling as a gift item for purchasing my curling iron. While I was truly excited for my curling iron, I was equally happy for the mango seedling. I've always wanted to plant a tree, I just never got around to buying a seedling. More trees mean cooler air especially during these months where the sun is pure torture. With temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius, the air-conditioner is full blast almost 12 hours a day. Why not install more ventilation into your home? I've read about Penguin Windows, a company which sells high-quality replacement windows to homeowners who want to make their homes safer, more attractive and energy-efficient.

Any other green tips out there fellow earthlings?
